          Course Overview

Processing grief and dealing with emotions that come with loss is a painful process. Some people choose to work through the stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance – on their own and others seek professional assistance in the form of counselling.

Grief counselling aims to help people cope with the physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive responses to loss. Counselling can help people process their emotions in a healthy manner.

The Intro to Grief & Loss Counselling micro-credential provides a comprehensive understanding of grief counselling principles and practical applications for individuals involved in supporting others through grief.

This 8-week course explores topics such as defining grief, navigating bereaved relationships, conducting effective bereavement counselling sessions, addressing complicated grief reactions, and providing specialized support for children and adolescents.

Additionally, emphasis is placed on developing self-awareness and self-care practices for caregivers and importantly, fostering post-traumatic growth in clients is explored.

The course is suitable for both novice and experienced counsellors, this course offers valuable insights and strategies for effectively supporting individuals through the grieving process.

Note:  This foundational course does not address counselling skills training. It provides knowledge and practical skills within the context of grief and loss counselling for people who already have training in basic counselling skills. Formal counselling skills training is required to assist people with grief and loss. Completing this course does not make you a counsellor or mental health practitioner.
