The Long-Term Impact of COVID-19 on Mental Health – Where to From Here? online workshop equips mental health practitioners with knowledge and understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on mental health in a South African context.

Explore the individual and social responses to the initial COVID-19 lockdown and gain insight into the long-term consequences for children and adolescents.

The CPD workshop will use the emotional epidemic curve to assist with understanding the onset of post-pandemic mental health challenges. Disaster psychiatry plays an important role during a pandemic and can help you to understand and manage the mental health challenges that may arise. 

In a post pandemic society, it is important to investigate the role of mental health and how it may be affected by the events that have taken place.

• Gain knowledge of the impact that COVID-19 has had on society, families and children.
• Develop an awareness of the long-term consequences of COVID-19 on children and adolescents in terms of their mental health and educational development.
• Develop awareness of the emotional epidemic curve of COVID-19.
• Understand how the viral infection peaks and curves affected the emotional epidemic curve.
• Explore the concept of disaster psychiatry and its application in a pandemic.
• Develop insight into Bowlby’s attachment theory and its significance in understanding the emergence of mental health issues in children and adolescents in particular.
• Learn about the role of mental health in a post pandemic society.
• Explore possible solutions. 

Workshop Presenter

Anita Kriel is a clinical psychologist who has been published in numerous academic journals, both nationally and internationally.

She started her own private practice in 2005 and works with adults and adolescents in out-patient and in-patient settings.

Anita is also a consultant for a long-term substance abuse rehabilitation centre in KwaZulu-Natal. She has been an educator at SACAP since 2019.
